Citation: Muktikesh Dash. “Malaria Vaccine Development: A Step Towards Reality”. EC Microbiology 2.3 (2015): 294-295. Malaria, a protozoan parasitic disease caused by five species of Plasmodium i.e., P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. knowlesi in humans. Nearly half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people in 97 countries and territories are at risk of malaria infection and 1.2 billon are at high risk (> 1 case of malaria per 1000 population each year) [1]. According to world malaria report 2014, 198 million cases of malaria occurred globally in 2013 (uncertainty range 124-283 million) and the disease led to 584,000 deaths (uncertainty range 367,000-755,000) [1]. Among five species of Plasmodium, the most dangerous P. falciparum malaria remains the commonest cause of under-five mortality in several countries [2].

Optimized Method for Purification of Expressed Plasmodium Vivax Duffy Binding Protein-II (PvDBP-II): Implication for Vivax Malaria Vaccine Development

Background: The purity and correct folding of a recombinant protein is critical for any structural, biochemical and vaccine design studies. Plasmodium vivax Duffy binding protein-II is a leading vaccine candidate for vivax malaria. In the present study, the purification process of recombinant DBP-IX (a variant form of PvDBP-II) was optimized to achieve the highest yield and purity. Moreover, ...

Rational development of a protective P. vivax vaccine evaluated with transgenic rodent parasite challenge models

Development of a protective and broadly-acting vaccine against the most widely distributed human malaria parasite, Plasmodium vivax, will be a major step towards malaria elimination. However, a P. vivax vaccine has remained elusive by the scarcity of pre-clinical models to test protective efficacy and support further clinical trials. In this study, we report the development of a highly protecti...

Approaching the Target: the Path Towards an Effective Malaria Vaccine

Developing an effective malaria vaccine has been the goal of the scientific community for many years. A malaria vaccine, added to existing tools and strategies, would further prevent infection and decrease the unacceptable malaria morbidity and mortality burden. Great progress has been made over the last decade and a number of vaccine candidates are in the clinical phases of development. The RT...
